The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has released the final versions of its opinion on gold nanoparticles and on platinum nanoparticles in cosmetic products: both reports point to a lack of sufficient data provided by manufacturers and express concerns about risks to the consumer.
The possible accumulation of these nanoparticles in certain organs (particularly the liver and spleen) and their properties may lead to a risk for human health – with, for gold nanoparticles, potential mutagenic/genotoxic effects.
