The European regulation 2022/63 of January 14, 2022 banning the food additive titanium dioxide (E171) has been published in the Official Journal of the EU. It will come into effect on February 8, 2022 and extends to the other EU countries. The suspension measure has been in force in France since January 1, 2020.

From August 8, 2021, food containing E171 can no longer be placed on the market. Those that had been previously allowed, will be able to remain so until their date of minimum durability or their use-by date. As of 2025, this colorant could also be banned in medicinal products.
