According to Sciensano, the Belgian health institute, (nano)particles of titanium dioxide have been detected, sometimes in very large quantities, in a significant number of masks tested in Belgium. The release of these particles has not been measured experimentally but
“some masks contain so much titanium dioxide that a possible risk cannot be excluded” as titanium dioxide is a probable carcinogen by inhalation.
