EFSA’s Scientific Committee has published two technical guides to clarify how EFSA scientists assess the presence of nanomaterials in the food and feed chain:
- Guidance on risk assessment of nanomaterials in the food and feed chain: animal and human health: this guide provides a roadmap for the progressive deployment and support of nanomaterials assessment.
- Guidance on technical requirements for regulated food and feed product applications to establish the presence of small particles including nanoparticles: this guidance concerns conventional materials that contain a fraction of small particles but do not meet the definition of engineered nanomaterials.
Both documents also define data and information requirements for companies applying for European marketing authorization for food additives or food contact materials.
