Member States have approved a ban on titanium dioxide in food throughout the European Union. The text should come into force at the beginning of 2022. A 6-month phase-out period will then begin, at the end of which a total ban on E171 in food products will apply.
This decision was voted in the Standing Committee on Foodstuffs (SCFCAH), on the proposal of the European Commission, following the scientific opinion of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluding that E171 can no longer be considered safe as a food additive.
